VE Day Celebrations

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, is the day when World War II in Europe officially ended. It was celebrated on May 8, 1945, after Germany surrendered to the Allies. It marked a time of joy and relief for many people who had endured the war.

The children had a wonderful day, going back in time as they celebrated 80 years since WWII ended.

The children had an excellent day. They dressed up in red/white/ and blue or wore clothing from the 1940s.

The children created bunting which was used to decorate the school. It looked amazing! They also baked/decorated biscuits and prepared jam sandwiches.

The staff enhanced the experience by showing the children what school would have been like in the 1940s:

  • They turned their smart boards into black boards and wrote in 'chalk' (white).
  • Children had to stand to attention when an adult walked into the room.
  • Children learnt about behaviour/discipline in the 1940s.
  • They completed drills with the PE teacher.
  • They learnt about elocution and handwriting.
  • They were called by their surnames.
  • They took part in activities like skipping and hoops.

Some of the children shared information about their family members who had served during the war.

The day culminated in a street party where the children got to eat the biscuits and sandwiches they'd prepared. Some children performed a dance and then they all sang together 'We'll meet again'. It was so heartwarming. It truly was a wonderful day and lovely to see the children incredibly engaged and excited. Thank you to all the staff for their hard work to make the day so special and memorable for the children.
